New Banister Fletcher

New Banister Fletcher

An introductory essay, which muses on issues around the writing of a world history of architecture, was given at an international conference Globalisation and Representation in 2005 and published subsequently in The Journal of Architecture in 2006. It can be read and downloaded here.

Early this millennium, I was appointed editor and then complete author of a new edition of Sir Bannister Fletcher’s history of Architecture. Quite a task. For many years a new (21st edition, a 21st century edition) was being planned, shaped and laid out. Most of the text before the Common Era was written; the historical narrative entirely by me, a number of the interspersed ‘capsules’ by a team of young historians working with me; the whole under the editorial guidance, on behalf of RIBA and Bannister Fletcher trustees, of Professor Adrian Forty.

The project ground to a halt following Elsevier (the parent publisher) reviewing all contracts following the 2008/9 economic crisis. Now a word has been published. Some of my texts should at least be available on this website.
